Author Christopher C. Bell Jr. presents “Lt. Williams on the Color Front,” a tense and powerful novel that returns readers to the U.S. Army in Germany during the early 1950s, when racial desegregation efforts exposed deep prejudice and sharp resistance within the ranks. Through the story of one young Black officer, the novel examines courage, leadership, and the personal cost of confronting racism in a system struggling to change.
In “Lt. Williams on the Color Front,” Lieutenant Neal Williams arrives as a newly assigned platoon leader in what had been an all-white infantry regiment. Instead of receiving support, he faces the calculated resistance of prejudiced white officers determined to block his success. As he fights to prove himself, Neal must navigate hostility, isolation, and the constant pressure of serving on a racial battlefield that extends far beyond combat.
The novel captures a critical moment in military history, when official desegregation did not erase entrenched bias. Bell brings that period to life through a story filled with tension, conflict, and determination. Neal's struggle becomes both a personal coming-of-age journey and a wider reflection on the racial barriers that shaped opportunity, command, and dignity for Black servicemen in that era.

About the Author
Christopher C. Bell Jr. is a Black man, a poet, an essayist, a lecturer on racial and ethnic studies, a Doctor of Education from Boston University Graduate School of Education, and a retired Army major who served as a lieutenant in Germany during the 1950s. He also served in Korea twice, France twice, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. These assignments and travels expanded his awareness and sensitivity to people and cultures. They moved him to write about his experiences.
Bell was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, during a time when racial segregation was the law of the land. He graduated from Virginia State University with a degree in chemistry and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he began writing poetry and fiction to use his spare time and clear his mind while reflecting on the cultural and racial realities he witnessed.
After retiring from the military, he earned his doctorate from Boston University's Graduate School of Education. He later served in the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC. He worked as a Program Coordinator in the District of Columbia Public School System, where he studied the relationship between high school student behavior, school academic structures, and community cultural ecology.
